Fire in the Hole!

By Webmaster18/12/201224/11/2018Notes & Queries

Stilton potter Rick Landy is an expert on the ceramic techniques of antiquity. When in 2006 Time Team unearthed evidence of Roman kilns on the nearby fenland, he volunteered to demonstrate exactly how effective these primitive-looking kilns could be.

Rick Landy lays in the firebars
Layers of green pottery are carefully positioned and the clay kiln built up around them
The fire is lit in the bottom of the kiln
The Romans didn’t care about their carbon footprint…
In the confines of the kiln, even a wood fire can reach a very high temperature
Opening the kiln to reveal the fired pottery
Rick Landy’s Roman kiln reveals its treasure
Better than the originals!
‘Nearly as good as Rick Landy’s!’
