STILTON VILLAGE APPRAISAL 1999 |
|
|
PART 2: VILLAGE APPRAISAL |
|
| Purpose: to investigate people's mobility, assess use
of public transport, identify danger areas, and seek suggestions for
improvement. Issues: road safety, rural transport, congestion, pollution. |
|
KEY FINDINGS |
|
| 3.1 75% [586] of respondents travel to work, training or study by car (Q12). Vehicle usage is also high for leisure and shopping, at 68% [556] (Q15). Overall, travel to and from the village is mainly by car - 84% [773] - but with buses providing 15% [134] of journeys (Q23). |
|
| 3.2 A small, but significant, number of respondents - between 5 and 15 % - reported difficulties in getting to medical facilities (Q16). There were mixed views on the effectiveness of the Yaxley Health Centre bus (Q23), poor access for those with disabilities, and the infrequency of the service are highlighted by some. | |
| 3.3 While most of those responsible for vehicles keep them on the drive or in a garage (Q17), nearly 10% [63] are kept on the road and 0.5% on the verge or pavement. As 0.5% represents only 4 respondents, perhaps most of those parking in these areas did not respond? | |
| 3.4 Most respondents - 72% - consider parking a safety risk in
Stilton (Q18) with Manor Road, Church
Street and the village centre being the main problem areas identified. In
some cases these coincide with road danger spots
(Q24) noted by many, eg the centre of
the village and outside the school and hall. However, Church Close and entering
the 30mph zone were also noted as danger spots. Manor Road would appear to
have a particular problem with parking, and was identifed as such by 30% [177]
of all respondents.
