STILTON VILLAGE APPRAISAL 1999

PART 1: INTRODUCTION
iv) About this report and web site

Document Conventions
Each of the 7 sections of this report contains the following sub-sections:
a) purpose: explaining why we were interested in the topic,
b) issues: listing the broad issues that affect Stilton,
c) key findings: what the questionnaires highlighted as key concerns,
d) selected analysis of questions which illustrate villagers' concerns or opinions.

Graphs, photographs, maps and images are included where appropriate.
Wherever possible, the number of respondents is reported, followed by the percentage that that number represents in square brackets []. The question number is shown in round brackets (), which provides a link to the scanned page of raw data in Appendix 2.
The Web Site
We decided to publish the Stilton Village Appraisal 1999 Report as a web site for a number of reasons:
a) a web site would be more dynamic and easy to update than a printed document,
b) a web site could be accessible from people's homes, and also schools and libraries,
c) a web site was more suitable to the interactive display of graphs, maps and data,
d) a web site could allow immediate interactive feedback,
e) a web site could link directly to other relevant sites,
f) the web site could also support the production of a printed report for readers unable to access the internet, [to print any page of the web site, select the File->Print option of your browser],
g) the web site could also be produced as a CD-ROM for access off-line (click here for details),
h) the web site would save paper.

The site was written in DreamWeaver, with charts produced in MicroSoft Excel97, and then optimised in Paintshop Pro. Most charts are 2-colour gif files, and most photographs and scans are 256-colour gif files to save space.

The site was created by d-zine.co.uk., an operation interested in the development of small web sites for not-for-profit organisations, small businesses, and the environment. The site is hosted by easily.co.uk, and the domain name redirection is handled by easily.co.uk.
