5. ENVIRONMENT

Purpose: to ask what improvements villagers would like made to their village, to see how 'green' the village is.
Issues: local environment, recycling, nuisance.

KEY FINDINGS
Dog fouling and litter continue to be a concern to a large number of people.
The maintenance of pavements and footpaths could be improved.
There was great interest in improving the centre of the village with tree and flower planting, more seating and attractive paving.
Residents are keen to use re-cycling facilities.

5.1 A number of suggestions as to how the local environment could be protected and enhanced were made (Q58).
A significant 81% [568] of respondents want to see more tree planting and 63% [445] would like to see the Conservation Area extended. Community composting was supported by 34% [241].
114 people made suggestions as to the other ways that the local environment could be improved (Q59). Many of the suggestions related to the need to clear up litter, improvements to the centre of the village, and the planting of flowers and trees. The top 5 responses are listed below :

5.2 The condition of some of the walkways and pavements was a concern to 68% [568] of people and there was support too for more cycle paths and more or better footpaths by 48% [399]. The support for more or better road sweeping, environmentally sensitive lamp posts, dropped kerbs, etc. can be seen in the chart opposite : (Q26)

5.3 826 people considered that the centre of the village could be improved (Q62). The most popular suggestions were to plant trees and flowers - 75% [622] - and more seating  - 57% [475]. 44% [364] were keen to see more attractive paving. Parking bays, traffic calming and and different lighting were all seen as important by more than 25% [208+].
Further questions about ways to improve the centre of the village focussed on litter and street cleaning, and re-decoration of buildings (Q63). The four major responses are shown opposite :

5.4 Residents were asked about different types of nuisance, and 650 feel that they are affected. 75% [480] are affected by dog-fouling, which is by far the greatest problem. Increased traffic noise affects 44% [283] and low-flying aircraft affect 20% [132]. Almost 100 people are troubled by motorcycles, and also by light pollution (Q61).

5.5 There was a strong feeling that Stilton could be kept clean and tidy by a number of initiatives, supported by 890 people. 91% [807] felt that people should take responsibility for their own property and rubbish. 68% [602] wanted more dog mess bins and slightly less wanted more rubbish bins [589]. There was support for the special rubbish collections and 45% [479] requested more frequent bin emptying and special collections. (Q60).

5.6 An overwhelming number of respondents - 96% [844] - indicated that they would be prepared to separate refuse for re-cycling if a special collection was made. (Q34)
Almost as many [861] would be prepared to use re-cycling facilities in Stilton. Support ranged from 89% [763] for a bottle bank to 64% [555] for a clothing bank, with support also shown for a newspaper bank, a skip for garden waste, a bulk rubbish skip, and a can bank. (Q35)
