PART 2: VILLAGE APPRAISAL
2. DEVELOPMENT AND HOUSING

Purpose: to determine whether households are 'trapped' by non-availability of suitable accommodation, to ask what types of developments would be acceptable to villagers, to gain people's views about recent developments, and to find out how people would like their village to develop in the future.
Issues: opportunities, inappropriate development, planning, village appearance.

KEY FINDINGS
Insufficient publicity is given to planning applications that affect the village.
The balance of housing is considered to be about right, with a large emphasis on no major expansion of the village.

2.1 Only 6% [28] of respondents indicated a need for alternative accommodation (Q3).

2.2 Development of Tourism Potential was marginally unpopular. Small business and jobs were in demand although small scale industrial workshops and tourist attractions were less supported (Q13).
2.3 Tourism ideas were centred around an emphasis on and promotion of village history along with an improved village appearance. A teashop / café with a craft shop was also suggested (Q14).
2.4 The number of houses is considered by the majority to be about right - 62% of respondents expressed this view. A significant number -28% - thought there had been too much building, and a further 20% considered new houses to be too small (Q29).

2.5 The demand for no further housing development was 31%, closely followed by a preference for small groups of buildings. However, the majority of 47% favoured conversion of redundant buildings (Q30).

The majority view of 36% [276] respondents was no need for any specific type of new housing in Stilton (Q31).

2.6 The majority of respondents - 69% [565] - were satisfied with the appearance of new buildings in Stilton (Q29).
2.7 The majority feeling was for Stilton to remain is it is, but with a working community emphasis (Q31).

2.8 Other development areas indicated more community spirit, improved shopping, activities and health care, more employment, and an improved and better maintained environment (Q65).
2.9 Moving to other accommodation was governed by property prices, moving costs, lack of available authority and housing association homes, and too few suitable homes to buy (Q4).

2.10 There is still a demand for rented accommodation  (Q5).
2.11 The majority indicated that there was no further need for housing of any kind in Stilton (36%). However, there was an indication that more bungalows, detached houses and larger houses were required (Q31). Stilton : Types of Housing
