STILTON VILLAGE APPRAISAL 1999 |
PART 2: VILLAGE APPRISAL |
| Purpose: to determine what 'anti social' activities
are of concern to villagers, and what measures should be taken to
safeguard residents. Issues: crime and crime prevention. |
KEY FINDINGS |
| 6.1 In commenting on the limited crime and anti-social behaviour that
occurs in Stilton, most respondents [74%] were concerned about vandalism
with drug taking [55%] and speeding [55%] coming next. Just under half of respondents were concerned with other crimes against property (burglary [48%], car crime [45%] and theft [42%]). However fewer respondents considered rowdiness [40%] or drunkenness [30%] an issue. Only 6% of people were not at all concerned over crime or anti-social behaviour. The overall safety of Stilton was reflected in the low level of concern over mugging [12%]. (Q32) |
| 6.2 Nearly two thirds of respondents felt that there were two measures
that would address these concerns, namely the provision of more activities
for young people [65%], and a greater police presence [62%]. Approximately one third of respondents saw better consultation with the police [38%], more neighbourhood watch schemes [33%], more education on the dangers of substance abuse [31%] and improved street lighting [28%]as being needed. Only 20% of respondents saw CCTV as being necessary. (Q33) |
