Issues: demographics, population change, village perception

Residents consider location and village size to be the most important things about Stilton.
1.1 Comparison of the 1991 Census with Questionnaire Respondants
1.1.1 1991 Census Data

Population 1991 = 2230

(1996 estimate = 2280)

Households = 820

Ethnic group = 98.3% white

Direct comparisons between the 1991 census and the questionnaire are difficult to make in some cases, as

- The census is now 9 years old,

- The questionnaire uses different class boundaries,

but the population size has probably grown little since 1996 (the last official estimate) as there have not been any large developments.

The households which returned the questionnaires represented 54% of the population, but those over age 60 are more highly represented than in the general population. It is probable that the 11-17 age group is under represented.

This could be explained by recent residents being less likely to complete the questionnaire, feeling less involved or interested in village affairs?
