PART 3: ACTION PLAN

The Action Plan is being developed following the formal launch of the Appraisal at the village meeting in January 2001, and consultation with local groups. The first meeting of the Action Plan group took place on 12th February 2001, where the Key Findings listed below were discussed.

The Key Findings from each section are listed below for consideration:

1. Village Profile
1.1 Stilton has a stable population, with 80% of respondents being resident in Stilton for more than 6 years.
1.2 Residents consider location and village size to be the most important things about Stilton.

2. Development and Housing
2.1 Insufficient publicity is given to planning applications that affect the village.
2.2 The balance of housing is considered to be about right, with a large emphasis on no major expansion of the village.

3. Traffic and Transport
3.1 Most respondents travel to work or place of study by car.
3.2 Most respondents consider parking to be a safety risk in Stilton, especially in Manor Road.
3.3 Speeding is regarded as an issue, with much support for speed control measures.

4. Facilities and Leisure
4.1 Most people use village shops on a regular basis.
4.2 There is strong interest in Sports & Keep Fit classes, computing classes, badminton, tennis, gardening, rambling and crafts.
4.3 62% of respondents do not partake in leisure activities because they don't want to.
4.4 Facilities for the 11-24 year age group are regarded by a majority of respondents as 'Poor'.
4.5 The church is regarded as an important historic building by 69% of respondents.
4.6 92% of respondents believe that Stilton needs a new community building.

5. Environment
5.1 Dog fouling and litter continue to be a concern to a large number of people.
5.2 The maintenance of pavements and footpaths could be improved.
5.3 There was great interest in improving the centre of the village with tree and flower planting, more seating and attractive paving.
5.4 Residents are keen to use re-cycling facilities.

6. Crime
6.1 Residents are most concerned about vandalism, drug-taking and speeding.
6.2 Residents are least concerned about mugging and drunkeness.
6.3 Almost two thirds of respondents felt that provision of activities for young people, and a greater police presence, would address their concerns.

7. Councils and Taxes
7.1 In both planning and spending matters the need for more and better publicity from the respective councils is very apparent.
7.2 There is general satisfaction with the planning process in Stilton.
