Stilton has
three Almshouses situated at the top of Fen Street. They are regulated
by the Charity Commission and managed by a local Board of Trustees.
Frances Worthington
was the widow of William Worthington who was landlord of the Angel
Inn in High Street. The Mrs. Worthington's charity was created to
provide housing for "three poor men and three poor women of Stilton".
The original
six houses were built in 1868 with just two rooms each. These were
later adapted to provide three larger homes while retaining the
original exterior with six front doors.
The
three Almshouses are occupied at the discretion of the Charity Trustees.
The Charity Scheme states that occupants should be 'persons in need
who are capable of independent living with a preference for those
persons resident in or who have a Stilton connection.'.
