AND FINALLY: THE REFEREE:
Dave Stanbridge
At the end of this year's competition, Dave Stanbridge announced his retirement. Research shows that Dave was first involved in 1982 and missed only two years in all that time. But he made up for those lost years by refereeing our appearances on both Blue Peter and Big Breakfast.
There will be some who rejoice in his departure, as he never allowed any deviation from the rules and was known to disqualify teams who failed to heed his warnings.
In the Peterborough Evening Telegraph on May 4th, Dave wrote:
"Having enjoyed my final edition of refereeing the Stilton Cheese Rolling, I would like to thank the people of Stilton for all their support. Special thanks are due to Olive Main, Carol Warren, Doug Maltman, the Julian family, Liam McGivern, Adam Vickers, Kelvin Davies, the"Golden Balls" rolling team and, of course, my wife Linda.
Finally, Warwick Davis was, as ever, the consummate professional and spent ages signing 'Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy' posters. Thanks Stilton!"
